Click to add to Goodreads shelf

Published: December 21, 2010

Pages: 343

Edition: Paperback, US

4th in the Soul Screamers series

My Rating: 5/5 Stars – Loved It!

I am currently taking part in the Soul Screamers Reading Challenge hosted by Fiktshun.

Goodreads Description:

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can’t just pretend nothing happened. But “complicated” doesn’t even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn’t just an ordinary girl. She’s a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people’s fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn’t above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

When I first read this book, I thought it was a major game changer for the series. The author took some big risks that definitely payed off. It was my favorite of the series (this was before IID, obviously).

*Slight spoilers ahead*

Kaylee and Nash’s relationship was so fragile in this book. You could feel the tension between them in their scenes together. If I was in Kaylee’s position, I would have distanced myself from Nash too. I just could not trust him after everything he did. Plus, the addition of Sabine didn’t help the matter at all.

Speaking of Sabine, she is something else! Sometimes I just wanted to slap her. But I also kind of respect her. She knows what she wants and is honest about it. She doesn’t BS you, which is nice. That doesn’t mean I still didn’t want to slap her at some points.

There were also Rachel Vincent’s signature Netherworld creatures, which I love. This book had more hellions, possessions, and maras. Doesn’t that sound like a recipe for awesomeness!?

Since this was my second time reading this, I noticed some nice Tod moments I didn’t pick out the first time around. I love Tod so much. If nothing else, read this series for Tod!

Overall: It’s Rachel Vincent people, need I say more?

Favorite Quotes (So many one liners, so little time)

“Can we save the live demo for later, please? Bean Sidhe in angst, here.”

“Just go away, Tod. I have enough to worry about without adding ‘taking stupid advice from a dead guy’ to the list.”
Tod blinked at me, and the smallest cobalt tremor of emotion rippled through his irises before he regained control. Before I could interpret what I’d seen. Then he sighed and blinked out of the room, pizza box and all.

“Whoever said it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved was full of crap.”

“Waiting on” Wednesday (2)

“Waiting on” Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine in order to share the releases your eagerly anticipating.

This week I’m waiting on Darkness Before Dawn by J.A. London, which comes out May 29th.

Goodreads description:

This electrifying new trilogy blends the best of paranormal and dystopian storytelling in a world where the war is over. And the vampires won.

Humans huddle in their walled cities, supplying blood in exchange for safety. But not even that is guaranteed. Dawn has lost her entire family and now reluctantly serves as the delegate to Lord Valentine, the most powerful vampire for miles. It isn’t until she meets Victor, Valentine’s son, that she realizes not all vampires are monsters….

Darkness Before Dawn is a fresh new story with captivating characters, unexpected plot twists, a fascinating setting, and a compelling voice. Written under the name J. A. London by a talented mother-son team, the trilogy is perfect for fans of True Blood and the House of Night and Morganville Vampires series.

This seems like a cool new take on vampire mythology. I can’t wait to learn more about this dystopian world setting. Plus, isn’t that cover awesome?!

Happy Reading!

Review: Lockdown by Alexander Gordon Smith

5/5 Stars- Loved it!

Goodreads Description

Furnace Penitentiary: the world’s most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth’s surface. Convicted of a murder he didn’t commit, sentenced to life without parole, “new fish” Alex Sawyer knows he has two choices: find a way out, or resign himself to a death behind bars, in the darkness at the bottom of the world. Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below. And behind everything is the mysterious, all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself, whose unthinkable acts have consequences that stretch far beyond the walls of the prison. Together with a bunch of inmates—some innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killers—Alex plans an escape. But as he starts to uncover the truth about Furnace’s deeper, darker purpose, Alex’s actions grow ever more dangerous, and he must risk everything to expose this nightmare that’s hidden from the eyes of the world.

What a way to kickoff a series! I’ve heard good things about this book, and when I first read the description I knew I would like it. It was thrilling, suspenseful, and downright terrifying at times.

First, the characters. I really liked Alex. He was a smartly written character you cared for. He wasn’t a perfect person, but he made a great protagonist. Donovan and Zee were awesome allies to Alex and provided some comic relief to their depressing situation.

Speaking of their situation, Furnace Penitentiary is definitely a place I NEVER want to visit. The warden gave me the creeps, the dogs were hecka scary, and the wheezers freaked me out! Fortunately, I like a little scary in my books, so it worked for me. But with the creepiness also comes mystery. This book had me asking a lot of questions. I really hope we learn more about Furnace in future books!

There were many suspense-filled scenes as well. The writing leaves you constantly on the edge of your seat. The last 10 pages of the book had me flipping through the pages with my heart pounding to find out how it would end. And the ending certainly did not disappoint. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one!

Overall: A story with plenty of thrills and chills along with some great characters. I loved it!

Favorite Quotes:

As for favorite quotes, there were a lot of creepy quotes that I really liked, but I’m gonna have you discover them on your own.

Plus, Alex, Donovan, and Zee had some good one-liners too.
